Two places in our Porto data have an open view toward the June sunset and at least two separate Reddit threads that name them: Miradouro da Vitória, on the north bank, and Jardim do Morro, on the Gaia side of the Douro. Both are within 500 m of a metro stop in a straight line. In December the sun sets further south, and Jardim do Morro is then only partly open.
For the rest of your trip, see the Porto guide, the best time to visit Porto, things to do in Porto and where to stay in Porto.
Which spots pass
| Viewpoint | View toward the June sunset | View toward the December sunset | Metro, straight line | Reddit threads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jardim do Morro | Open | Partly blocked | 68 m to Jardim do Morro | 7 |
| Miradouro da Vitória | Open | Open | 452 m to São Bento | 7 |
The sun sets in the north-west in June and in the south-west in December. Porto sunset times on a flat horizon are 21:10 on 21 June and 17:08 on 21 December, in local time. A hill or a tall building in that direction shifts the real time earlier.
Miradouro da Vitória
On the north bank of the Douro, in the parish of Vitória. It is the only one of the two that is open in both seasons.
- Metro: São Bento, 452 m in a straight line.
- View: open in June and open in December.
- Reddit: 7 separate threads name it.
Jardim do Morro
A garden in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank. OpenStreetMap maps the garden as one area, so we measured from its centre.
- Metro: the Jardim do Morro stop, 68 m in a straight line.
- View: open in June, partly open in December.
- Reddit: 7 separate threads name it.
How we checked the view
The check runs in four steps for each place:
- Start from the compass direction of the sunset on 21 June and on 21 December.
- Read the ground height at seven distances along that line, from 150 m out to 10 km.
- Work out how high the highest point rises above the eye, as an angle.
- Call the view open when that angle is under half a degree, partly blocked up to 2 degrees, and blocked above that.
The height data is a 90 m grid. Big buildings and tree canopy are partly in it, and small ones are not. A place on a cliff edge or a bridge can get a wrong starting height.
What the Reddit counts mean
The last column counts separate Reddit threads whose post names the place, found through public RSS search in r/porto and r/portugal. It shows that people talk about the place. It does not say they rate it, and we kept no text from any thread.
Limits of this page. The view is our estimate and has not been checked on site. We read 590 threads in our last search for the names OpenStreetMap uses, so a place people call by another name is missing. A one-word name such as “Mirante” is skipped on purpose, because it matches too many towns. Opening hours and prices are not covered.
How we made this page
We found named viewpoints and parks in OpenStreetMap, measured the terrain toward the sunset from each, and counted the Reddit threads that name each place. A place needs an open view and at least two separate threads to be listed.
Research and first drafts are AI-assisted. Every figure comes from open data listed on the page with its source and date, and a person reviews each page before it goes live.
