May is a strong month in Portugal: it ranks 2nd to 5th of 12 on our score in every city, and Lagos has the highest score of the 10. The crowd is the surprise. Porto, Coimbra and Evora were busier in May than in June in all three years of overnight-stay data from Statistics Portugal (INE), while Lagos, Faro, Cascais and Funchal were quieter in May in all three. June scores higher than May in all 10 cities and is drier in all 10. Pick May for fewer people in the Algarve, Cascais or Madeira. Pick June for fewer people in Porto, Coimbra or Evora, and for drier weather everywhere. Rain and temperature come from NASA POWER, NASA’s open climate data.

Is Portugal crowded in May?

Not by August standards: in May the share of August overnight stays runs from 65% in Lagos to 92% in Coimbra, so every city is below its August level, with Coimbra, Funchal and Porto closest to it and Lagos and Aveiro furthest from it.

We measure crowds as overnight stays from Statistics Portugal (INE), as a share of each city’s busiest month, which is August in every city. The rank table at the end of this page lists the share for all 10 cities.

Is May busier than June?

In Porto, Coimbra and Evora, yes, in all three years of INE data we have. In Lagos, Faro, Cascais and Funchal, no, in all three. In Sintra, Aveiro and Braga the years disagree.

May overnight stays divided by June overnight stays (INE, registered tourist lodging). 1.00 would mean May is as busy as June; above 1.00, May is busier. Highlighted: cities where the ratio is above 1.00 in all three years.

We compared overnight stays for May and June in 2023, 2024 and 2025. May has 31 days and June has 30, so we divided each month’s stays by its days first. Above 1.00 means May was busier.

  • Per INE, Coimbra shows the widest gap: 92% of its August level in May and 83% in June, with ratios of 1.17, 1.04 and 1.15.
  • Per INE, Lagos shows the widest gap the other way: 65% in May and 77% in June, with ratios of 0.84, 0.87 and 0.83.
  • In Funchal the gap is thin, 0.98, 0.99 and 0.98.

Read this as a pattern from three years, not a forecast. INE publishes monthly totals, so we cannot see which week was busy, and we have no event data to say why.

Is it better to visit Portugal in May or June?

June scores higher than May in all 10 cities. The gap is smallest in Funchal, 0.33 to 0.34, and widest in Coimbra and Braga, 0.20 to 0.35 and 0.19 to 0.34. By NASA POWER averages June is also drier everywhere, with 0.2 to 0.6 times May’s rain. The price is a fuller Algarve.

What is the hottest part of Portugal in May?

Inland Evora is the hottest by day, with an afternoon high of 26.8 °C (80 °F), but its nights fall to 11.9 °C (53 °F). Over the whole day Faro is warmest, with a mean of 18.4 °C (65 °F), then Evora at 18.3 °C (65 °F) and Funchal at 18.2 °C (65 °F). Braga is coldest, at 14.3 °C (58 °F).

Can you swim in Portugal in May?

Not on air temperature alone, because afternoon highs of 22.4 °C (72 °F) in Faro, 20.2 °C (68 °F) in Lagos and 26.8 °C (80 °F) inland in Evora are mild to warm air and do not tell you how cold the sea is.

We cannot answer the sea question yet. We have no sourced sea-temperature data for these cities, and air temperature does not tell you the water temperature, so we do not guess.

What should you wear in Portugal in May?

Pack layers, because the gap between the daytime high and the night low is 14.9 °C in Evora, 12.9 °C in Coimbra and 12.2 °C in Braga but only 2.6 °C in Funchal, and rain is likeliest in the north, where shoes that dry help.

City High Low Swing
Evora 26.8 °C (80 °F) 11.9 °C (53 °F) 14.9 °C
Coimbra 23.0 °C (73 °F) 10.1 °C (50 °F) 12.9 °C
Braga 21.5 °C (71 °F) 9.3 °C (49 °F) 12.2 °C
Aveiro 21.4 °C (71 °F) 12.8 °C (55 °F) 8.6 °C
Sintra 21.0 °C (70 °F) 13.8 °C (57 °F) 7.2 °C
Faro 22.4 °C (72 °F) 15.4 °C (60 °F) 7.0 °C
Porto 20.1 °C (68 °F) 13.1 °C (56 °F) 7.0 °C
Cascais 19.7 °C (67 °F) 15.1 °C (59 °F) 4.6 °C
Lagos 20.2 °C (68 °F) 15.8 °C (60 °F) 4.4 °C
Funchal 20.0 °C (68 °F) 17.4 °C (63 °F) 2.6 °C

Inland, Evora has hot afternoons at 26.8 °C (80 °F), yet nights fall to 11.9 °C (53 °F), and Coimbra and Braga drop to 10.1 °C (50 °F) and 9.3 °C (49 °F), so bring a warm layer for the evening. In Funchal, Lagos and Cascais the swing is small, 2.6 °C, 4.4 °C and 4.6 °C, so one light layer is likely enough day and night. For mobile data on the trip, see the eSIM comparison.

High and low: typical daytime high and night low, averaged over every May day of 2015-2024 (NASA POWER). How busy: May overnight stays as a share of August, the busiest month in every city (INE, 2023-2025). Score: our best-time score, the same one on each city's best-time page. "May in its year" is where May ranks among that city's 12 months.

The table shows the high and the low, while the score uses a separate long-term mean of day and night, so it can read colder than sites that print only the high.

What we cannot tell you yet

Question What we can say
Is May cheaper than June? INE counts overnight stays, not prices. Demand in May runs from 65% of the busiest month in Lagos to 92% in Coimbra, but we have no monthly price data. For one city’s costs, see what a trip to Porto costs.
Why is Coimbra busier in May? We have no sourced event data, so this page shows the pattern and does not explain it. Check the town’s own pages for events on your dates.
Is the sea warm enough? We have no sea-temperature data, so we do not say.

Figures as of October 2026. Our climate figures are for a grid square of 0.5 by 0.625 degrees, about 56 by 54 km, not a city weather station. A square near the coast mixes in sea air, and Funchal’s square is mostly sea. Rain is a monthly average, not a forecast for your dates. Lisbon is not in our 10 cities.

How we made this page

Our script read two open sources for each of the 10 cities and ranked them on the same best-time score as each city's own page, with one change: because May has 31 days and June has 30, every month's overnight stays are divided by its days before the crowd share, the score and the May-to-June ratio are worked out. The city best-time pages use the raw monthly totals, so their June figures run a little lower. Highs and lows are averages of every May day from 2015 to 2024. The swing is the high minus the low. The rain figures are monthly climate averages for May and June. The crowd figure is overnight stays as a share of the city's busiest month, from INE data for 2023 to 2025. We have not visited these cities for this page.

Research and first drafts are AI-assisted. Every figure comes from open data listed on the page with its source and date, and a person reviews each page before it goes live.
