The Lisbon area: Cascais and Sintra
| City | High | Low | Rain a day | How busy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cascais | 16.3 °C (61 °F) | 12.8 °C (55 °F) | 2.1 mm | 40% |

The Algarve and Madeira: Lagos, Faro and Funchal
| City | High | Low | Rain a day | How busy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lagos | 17.0 °C (63 °F) | 14.3 °C (58 °F) | 2.5 mm | 19% |

Inland Alentejo: Evora
Evora has a mild afternoon, 16.6 °C (62 °F), and the driest air on the mainland, 1.9 mm of rain a day. It drops to 6.5 °C (44 °F) at night, so it ranks 6th of the 10 cities and 11th of 12 months in its own year.

What we cannot tell you yet
- Can you swim in Portugal in December? We have no sea-temperature data for these cities, and air temperature does not tell you the water temperature, so we do not guess.
- Is December cheap? INE counts overnight stays, not prices. Demand runs from 19% of the busiest month in Lagos to 68% in Funchal, but we have no monthly price data. For one city’s costs, see what a trip to Porto costs.
- How busy is Christmas week? INE publishes monthly totals. We have no weekly data and no sourced event data, so this page does not cover Christmas markets, lights or New Year’s Eve.

Planning an earlier trip? See Portugal in November. Planning a later trip instead? See Portugal in January, Portugal in February, Portugal in March, Portugal in April or Portugal in May. Figures as of October 2026. Our climate figures are for a grid square of 0.5 by 0.625 degrees, about 56 by 54 km, not a city weather station. Near the coast that square mixes in sea air, so day and night are closer together than in town. Lisbon is not in our 10 cities.
How we made this page
Our script read two open sources for each of the 10 cities and ranked them on the same best-time score as each city's own page. Highs and lows are averages of every December day from 2015 to 2024. The crowd figure is December overnight stays as a share of the city's busiest month, from INE data for 2023 to 2025. We have not visited these cities for this page.
Research and first drafts are AI-assisted. Every figure comes from open data listed on the page with its source and date, and a person reviews each page before it goes live.
