November is the wettest month of the year in 9 of our 10 cities. Pick Funchal for warm and dry, Lagos for quiet, and skip the north. On our 0 to 1 score for mild, dry and not too full, Funchal gets 0.31 with 1.7 mm of rain a day, and Lagos gets 0.25 with 3.4 mm. We have no sea-temperature data, so we cannot say whether you can swim.

What is the rainiest month in Portugal?

In 9 of our 10 cities the rainiest month of the year is November. Funchal is the exception: its wettest month is December at 1.71 mm a day, and November follows at 1.69 mm. We checked all 12 months of rain for each city, and the table shows November next to July.

City Rain a day in November Rain a day in July Wettest month
Braga 4.6 mm 0.62 mm November
Porto 4.6 mm 0.41 mm November
Aveiro 4.4 mm 0.35 mm November
Coimbra 4.0 mm 0.29 mm November
Lagos 3.4 mm 0.03 mm November

Sintra 3.1 mm 0.14 mm November
Evora 2.8 mm 0.11 mm November
Funchal 1.7 mm 0.17 mm December
  • July is the driest month in every one of the 10 cities.
  • Lagos and Faro get 0.03 mm of rain a day in July and 3.4 mm and 3.1 mm in November.
  • The north is wetter than the south in November: 4.0 to 4.6 mm a day against 3.1 to 3.4 mm in the Algarve and Lisbon area. Porto gets 4.6 mm a day and Lagos 3.4 mm, so a northern trip needs a rain plan more than a southern one.

Is November a good time to visit Portugal?

November suits Funchal if you want warm and dry, Lagos if you want quiet, and none of the northern cities, which score between 0.00 and 0.05. Even the best city, Funchal, scores only 0.31 on the 0 to 1 scale. The two leaders trade warmth and rain against crowds.

  • Funchal: score 0.31, highs of 20.7 °C (69 °F), lows of 18.8 °C (66 °F), 1.7 mm of rain a day, 77% of its busiest month.
  • Lagos: score 0.25, highs of 18.8 °C (66 °F), lows of 15.7 °C (60 °F), 3.4 mm of rain a day, 28% of its busiest month.
  • Funchal is warmer by day and night and about half as wet. Lagos has less than half the crowd. The Funchal best-time page and the Lagos best-time page show all 12 months for each.

High and low: typical daytime high and night low, averaged over every November day of 2015-2024 (NASA POWER). How busy: November overnight stays as a share of August, the busiest month in every city (INE, 2023-2025). Score: our best-time score, the same one on each city's best-time page. "November in its year" is where November ranks among that city's 12 months.

We ranked the 10 cities with one rule: mild, dry and not too full scores best. The table shows the high and the low, while the score uses a separate long-term mean of day and night, so it can read colder than sites that print only the high. Typical highs run from 14.7 °C (58 °F) in Braga to 20.7 °C (69 °F) in Funchal.

  • Faro: highs of 19.2 °C (67 °F), lows of 14.4 °C (58 °F), 3.1 mm.
  • Lagos: highs of 18.8 °C (66 °F), lows of 15.7 °C (60 °F), 3.4 mm.

Which part of Portugal is warmest in November?

Madeira is the warmest part, and Lagos is the warmest on the mainland by mean temperature, 16.6 °C (62 °F). By daytime high alone, the mainland order changes: Evora reaches 19.3 °C (67 °F) and Faro 19.2 °C (67 °F), both above Lagos at 18.8 °C (66 °F). Evora then falls to 8.7 °C (48 °F) at night, so by day and night together it is far cooler than the coast. We have no data for Lisbon or the Azores.

What should you wear in Portugal in November?

Pack for rain first and for the gap between day and night second. The swing from the daily high to the night low is 10.6 °C in Evora and only 1.9 °C in Funchal.

  • In the north, bring a rain jacket and shoes that dry. Porto and Braga get 4.6 mm of rain a day.
  • Inland, Evora has warm afternoons, yet its nights fall to 8.7 °C (48 °F). Bring a warm layer for the evening.
  • On the coast and in Madeira the swing is small, 3.1 °C in Lagos and 1.9 °C in Funchal, so one warm layer works day and night. Lagos still gets 3.4 mm of rain a day, so a jacket belongs in the bag there too.

Is Portugal crowded in November?

We measure crowds as overnight stays from Statistics Portugal (INE), as a share of each city’s busiest month, which is August in every city. By that count Funchal is the fullest at 77% and Lagos the quietest at 28%.

  • Quietest: Lagos at 28% of its busiest month, then Faro at 47% and Aveiro at 48%, per the same INE counts.
  • Fullest on the mainland: Porto and Coimbra, at 62% each.
  • The best-scoring city is also the busiest, so if quiet matters more than warmth, Lagos is the pick.

Rain explains much of the score gain: December gets less rain a day than November in 9 of the 10 cities, and Funchal is level at 1.7 mm.

  • In Lagos the share of the busiest month falls from 28% to 19%, rain falls from 3.4 mm to 2.5 mm a day, and the score rises from 0.25 to 0.32.
  • In Funchal the share falls from 77% to 68%, and the score rises from 0.31 to 0.34.

What we cannot tell you yet

  • Can you swim in Portugal in November? We have no sea-temperature data for these cities, and air temperature does not tell you the water temperature, so we do not guess.
  • What is the cheapest month to visit Portugal? INE counts overnight stays, not prices. Demand in November runs from 28% of the busiest month in Lagos to 77% in Funchal, but we have no monthly price data. For one city’s costs, see what a trip to Porto costs.
  • Is there anything on? We have no sourced event data, so this page does not cover festivals or holiday opening hours.

Figures as of October 2026. Our climate figures are for a grid square of 0.5 by 0.625 degrees, about 56 by 54 km, not a city weather station. Near the coast that square mixes in sea air, so day and night are closer together than in town. Rain is a monthly average, not a forecast for your dates. Lisbon is not in our 10 cities. How we made this page

Our script read two open sources for each of the 10 cities and ranked them on the same best-time score as each city's own page. Highs and lows are averages of every November day from 2015 to 2024. The swing is the high minus the low. The rain figures are monthly climate averages for all 12 months, so we could check which month is the wettest in each city. The crowd figure is November overnight stays as a share of the city's busiest month, from INE data for 2023 to 2025. We have not visited these cities for this page.

Research and first drafts are AI-assisted. Every figure comes from open data listed on the page with its source and date, and a person reviews each page before it goes live.
